چکیده

Several caching schemes for realtime multimedia systems have been proposed but they have only concentrated on the hit ratio as a performance metric without providing any means to utilize the disk bandwidth gained through cache hits. A high cache hit ratio alone does not capture the eeectiveness of a caching scheme for such systems unless hiccup-free service is guaranteed. We evaluate four caching schemes which make it possible to provide service to additional streams with the saved disk bandwidth. We rst present the SPT-L scheme, which has a signiicant overhead accompanied by the best hit ratio. STP-L suuers from frequent starvation, which supports our claim that a high cache hit ratio alone does not necessarily result in better performance. Next, we propose the NIC scheme in which no cached intervals are preempted or replaced unless they have nished their playback. We also propose the PSIC scheme, which preempts the cached intervals for more valuable intervals but still guarantees hiccup-free playback. Although PSIC shows good performance without much overhead, the cache ratio needs to be determined in advance. Since the optimal cache hit ratio is not easy to obtain and can vary dynamically depending on the workload situation, we present the DIC scheme in which cache ratio is adjusted according to the state of the systems.

Caching Strategies for Continuous - media

Data Caching is widely used to improve the performance of multimedia systems. Even though Several caching schemes have been proposed for multimedia systems, they only try to improve the cache hit ratio. Since the continuous-media servers should guarantee hiccup-free services, a high cache hit ratio alone does not capture the eeectiveness of a caching scheme. We rst show that the conventional mu...

A Survey of Proxy Caching Mechanisms for Multimedia Data Streams

Although many web caching techniques have been developed to improve Web performance, existing proxy caching schemes do not support the multimedia data stream well. In this paper, we briefly describe the basic characteristics of steaming media caching and traditional web caching and discuss their dissimilarities. Then, we survey the proxy caching mechanisms for multimedia data streams, and final...

RCache: Design and Analysis of Scalable, Fault Tolerant Multimedia Stream Caching Schemes

In the current Internet, web content is increasingly being cached closer to the end-user to reduce network and web server load and therefore improve performance and user perceived quality. Existing web caching systems typically cache entire web documents and attempt to keep them consistent with the origin server. This approach works well for text and images; for bandwidth intensive multimedia d...

Caching Techniques for Streaming Multimedia over the Internet

Existing solutions for streaming multimedia in the Internet do not scale in terms of object size and number of supported streams. Using separate unicast streams, for example, will overload both network and servers. While caching is the standard technique for improving scalability, existing caching schemes do not support streaming media well. In this paper, we propose a complete solution for cac...
